There are many benefits to seeing bees around your home, but make sure they are the RIGHT kind of bee. Bumblebees are known to be unaggressive and harmless to your home, and play a vital role in pollination and in the production of honey. These bees are the kind you should welcome into your gardens as they are definitely having a difficult time.
Carpenter Bees, are also a pollinator but known more for its woodworking abilities. Carpenter bees will burrow into the structure of your house and can often weaken the frame or supportive wood structures. Furthermore, if carpenter bees nest in wood on your property year after year, the damage they cause can become severe.
Their appearances can be similar and its important to know which pest you are seeing around the yard. The primary difference is found on the topside of their abdominal sections: In bumblebees, the abdominal section is furry and contains one to four yellow stripes; in contrast, the carpenter bee has a yellow midsection with a black dot in the center. Bumblebees are also noticeably larger and nonaggressive; carpenter bees, the males in particular, are often very territorial and aggressive. Either way, remember to approach and examine them with caution when you’re trying to identify the bees in your yard.
